IL Tutorial: Search Engines

Search Engines

Search Engine Marketing by Danard Vincente

A search engine uses software called spiders or robots to compile a database of pages found on the Internet. This database represents a portion of the web, not everything available on the Internet, and each search engine has a somewhat different database.

Google, Bing, and Yahoo! are examples of search engines.

Most search engines require that you enter your search terms and then execute a search.

However, be sure to always read the information available at each search site under Help, Search Tips, Advance Search, or FAQ, because each search engine has its own search methods and its own options.

Use a search engine:

  • When your topic is narrow or obscure.
  • When your subject consists of more than one concept.
  • When you want to retrieve individual documents or web pages on your topic.
  • When you want to search the full-text of web pages.
