IL Tutorial: Quality Control

Quality on the Web

Anyone can publish anything on the Web

Websites can be created by:

  • Governments.
  • Libraries.
  • Non-profit organizations.
  • Museums.
  • Schools, colleges and universities.
  • Associations.
  • Companies.
  • Individuals.

Because there is no "quality control", the information you find on the web may be unreliable and inaccurate. For example, the RYT Hospital website looks very professionally done, yet is completely fictitious. Therefore, you will need to evaluate carefully what you find.

Use the web when you need:

  • Up-to-the-minute information like news reports, weather forecast, sports scores, stock quotes.
  • To link through the databases available through the library.
  • Company reports or information.
  • Government publications.
  • Statistics.
  • To use a variety of services like travel reservations, shopping, auctions, employment listings, directory listings, phone numbers.
  • To learn about companies, universities, government agencies, nonprofit groups, museums.
