NSCC's Mobile App Guide for Teaching and Learning: NSCC Apps

This guide is for faculty and students to help them better understand and use mobile apps (particularly OS, Android, and Windows) at North Shore Community College to enhance the teaching and learning environment.

These apps are accessible only by students, faculty, and staff at North Shore Community College. These apps will often require that you enter in your NSCC login credentials or college ID number.

Atomic Learning

Ideas for Educational Use: Faculty and/or students can use video tutorials to gain skills on software applications, Web 2.0 resources, computer literacy, and more. College staff can use video tutorials for professional development opportunities.

Tips and Considerations: The first time you log into the App, you must use your full NSCC email address and password.

Blogger

Start blogging on the go. With Blogger, you can: compose a post that you can save as a draft or immediately publish; view a list of your saved and published posts; switch account/blog if you have more than one; embed an image from the gallery, or, by taking a picture directly from the app; add labels to your posts; and add location information.

Ideas for Educational Use: Encourage students to blog from events and environments relevant to your course.

Tips and Considerations: On the initial login page for Blogger, enter your full NSCC email and leave the password field blank before pressing the "Sign-in" button. This will provide another login portal that resembles Pipeline. Use your regular NSCC username and password to login here.

Ebrary

Ebrary is an online digital library of scholarly academic electronic books.

Ideas for Educational Use: This app is great for any subject. It allows students access to the library's academic digital books.

Tips and Considerations: This app allows you to browse, view, search, download, and annotate documents (with some printing capabilities).

Ellucian Go

"NSCC's App (Ellucian Go) is intended for mobile devices and it is integrated with Pipeline. Some features include:

  • Check grades and course schedules.
  • Students receive notifications for account holds.
  • Faculty can view class rosters.
  • Find Courses allows searching of scheduled courses.
  • Get Directions allows you to select campus and obtain directions from Google maps, college calendar important numbers, and a college directory search.
  • News and events from the public website are integrated within the App.
  • Access to communication channels for enrollment services, student accounts, student support and technology updates.
  • Access to library and NSCC social media links."

EBSCO

EBSCO is a library database that offers subject indexes, point-of-care medical reference, some historical digital archives, and e-books.

Ideas for Educational Use: This app is excellent for general research.

Tips and Considerations: Limit results to full text or peer review. Sort by relevance or date. Save results for offline access.

Google+

"Stay connected and share life as it happens with Google+. Join a Hangout, post a photo, or see what friends are sharing while you're on the go."

Ideas for Educational Use: Use Hangouts and Circles for class collaboration activities.

Tips and Considerations: Use your NSCC login information to access. Use Picassa for unlimited storage. Use the YouTube search box within to search for YouTube videos.

Google Drive

With Google Drive, you can store all your files in one place, so you can access them from anywhere and share them with others.

Ideas for Educational Use: This is a good tool for student collaboration, as students can use the same space at the same time or different times to collaborate. Use to have students comment on each other's work, amend work, or team up on projects.

Tips and Considerations: Use your NSCC login information to access.

Google Hangouts

"Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, phones and tablets."

Ideas for Educational Use: Instructors can teach to multiple locations at the same time.

Tips and Considerations: Do trial runs with Google Hangouts before holding a session.

Overdrive

Through Overdrive, you can access ebooks and audiobooks from lending libraries that you can download to your computer or a portable device.

Ideas for Educational Use: For many different courses, students can borrow various ebooks and audiobooks relevant to the course content or that are assigned.

Tips and Considerations: NSCC users have access to the NOBLE lending library database. To access ebooks you must set-up an Adobe Digital Editions account. Refer to the NOBLE Help resources for information and how-to tutorials. Since ebooks and audioboks are checked-out on loan, they have expiration dates.

Quickoffice

With the Quickoffice app, you can access and edit Microsoft Office documents (PowerPoints, Spreadsheets, and Word files) with your mobile device.

Ideas for Educational Use: Faculty and students can access course-related documents and edit them on the go.

Tips and Considerations: Quickoffice is a Google product. It requires a Google account to access. NSCC users can use their college credentials to login. Documents are stored in Google Drive.
