NSCC's Mobile App Guide for Teaching and Learning: Create

This guide is for faculty and students to help them better understand and use mobile apps (particularly OS, Android, and Windows) at North Shore Community College to enhance the teaching and learning environment.

These apps provide students and faculty with the opportunity to create course materials and content that can be shared within the class or beyond. The creations can be used to present ideas, aid in studying, or better communicate course concepts and ideas.

Quizlet is a free flashcard creation app that can be used to study, create, and share flashcards. Teachers can create their own flashcards for students or use pre-submitted cards. Students can use six modes (Flashcards, Learn, Scatter, Speller, Test, Space Race) to study.

Ideas for Educational Use: Drag and drop status updates, photos or videos to bring together the social media elements that will best illustrate a story. Your story is always editable, so you can pull in the latest from the social Web.

Tips and Considerations: Storify stories can be embedded anywhere on the Web by simply pasting and embedding the code. It works similar to embedding video.

Tiny Classroom Flash Cards

"Tiny Classroom Flash Cards is a feature rich flash card application for foreign language study with an intuitive and unique learning environment. Access flash card learning lists for 30 separate languages. Make or import your own sets of flash cards."

Ideas for Educational Use: Flashcards are a popular way to study new material, especially when trying to learn vocabulary words, acronyms, or special technical topics.

Tips and Considerations: You can download content from various locations. From the Web, you can locate sites that have content already available. You can also pull flashcards from another app, as long as they are in CSV format. You can also create your own in TXT format.

"Vine is an app owned by Twitter that enables its users to create and post short video clips with a maximum clip length of six seconds and can be shared or embedded on social networking services."

Ideas for Educational Use: Pair with information on a class website or blog. Other ways to use Vine include: announce homework to students; model how students should execute a task; market upcoming events to followers; film solutions to math problems; identify symbols and silent metaphor.

Tips and Considerations: App users must be at least 17 years old.

Voice Record Pro HD

"Voice Record Pro is a professional voice recorder. It allows you to record voice memos and on-site sounds at unlimited length with configurable quality."

Ideas for Educational Use: Great for recordings, such as a lecture and to share on a Dropbox.

Tips and Considerations: There is no advertisement for a charge. Recorded audio files can play on any operating system. You can share voice memo by email or transfer audio files to your computer (PC/Mac) using USB. An iTunes account is required.
