NSCC's Mobile App Guide for Teaching and Learning: Notate

This guide is for faculty and students to help them better understand and use mobile apps (particularly OS, Android, and Windows) at North Shore Community College to enhance the teaching and learning environment.

These apps help both student and faculty to take notes and keep track of useful information. They allow to annotate materials, such as websites, images, and other digital content.

Air Sketch

This app allows you to turn your iPad into a wireless whiteboard. You can also make notes on PDF documents and images live.

Ideas for Educational Use: This app allows you to better illustrate your ideas and material to the entire class, rather than to just a handful of people who can see the iPad.

Tips and Considerations: There is a limited free version available. Air Sketch is designed to work with a computer connected to the same local network as your iPad.

Diigo

Diigo is your all-purpose digital library. App features includes: bookmarks, archives, annotations, notes, images, and screenshots. Collect everything in one place. Find and share it easily. Access it anywhere.

Ideas for Educational Use: Students can save webpages to read offline at a convenient time and can annotate them using the Diigo's annotation service.

Tips and Considerations: For iPhone, look under Diigo Browser.

Dragon Dictation

Educreations

Educreations is an app that turns your iPad into a recordable whiteboard for creating tutorials.

Ideas for Educational Use: This app allows you to: create quick video tutorials, explain formulas, develop animated lessons, and comment on photos.

Tips and Considerations: With the latest version, you can use an erase tool, restart recordings without losing work, and login with Facebook or Google accounts.

Evernote

Evernote is an easy-to-use free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized. Save your ideas and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, and record voice reminders. It makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go.

Penultimate

Penultimate is a handwriting app that allows syncing with Evernote. "Penultimate gives you the convenience and feel of writing on paper with the added power and availability of Evernote. Take notes in class or a meeting, journal your thoughts, or outline your next big idea -- in the office, on the go, or at home on the sofa."

Ideas for Educational Use: Users that prefer writing than typing for note-taking might find this app useful. Users have they ability to create visuals/graphics. It's great for mind mapping!

Quickoffice

With the Quickoffice app, you can access and edit Microsoft Office documents (PowerPoints, Spreadsheets, and Word files) with your mobile device.

Ideas for Educational Use: Faculty and students can access course-related documents and edit them on the go.

Tips and Considerations: Quickoffice is a Google product. It requires a Google account to access. NSCC users can use their college credentials to login. Documents are stored in Google Drive.

ScreenChomp

This app is a recordable whiteboard. You can write your ideas and share them. ScreenChomp records your touchscreen interactions and audio.

Ideas for Educational Use: Use the whiteboard to explain a difficult concept and share with students.

Side by Side

"Side by Side is a multiple-window reader/browser with offline reading and note taking capabilities. It turns the iPad into multiple resizable reading devices working in parallel."

Ideas for Educational Use: A learner may wish to see more than one source of information while taking notes.

Tips and Considerations: Side by Side has its own browser for opening websites. PDFs and text files can be opened into Side by Side from Dropbox or from email attachments. Notes written in Side by Side can be emailed, saved into Dropbox or opened into other apps on the iPad. This software does not allow you to run apps or books (Kindle, for example) side-by-side. It only allows for Web-based material.

Skitch

With Skitch, you can annotate images and documents with arrows, stamps, shapes, text, and more. Use Skitch to markup a PDF, snap your screen, annotate a photo, or create something new with a blank canvas.
