Why Use Books?

Books are the traditional medium for keeping records, and are excellent sources for research. Thousands of books are published each year on nearly as many topics. Books are good sources for an overview of a particular topic, to find historical and biographical information, and to support an argument. For current science topics be sure to check the  book's date of publication.

Search HELM for books in our library and all HELM libraries.

HELM Catalog and Snap! Search

Start all of your searches by using the Library Website.  Snap! Search will look for almost everything the library has about about psychology (books, ebooks, journal articles, and media) so you will get a lot of results by using this.  SNAP! Search will even search the databases!  You can always use limiters and narrow your search.  The HELM Catalog will only search for books and media.

If you are looking specifically for books, the HELM Catalog will help you see what NSCC owns and will let you place a hold on books from other HELM Libraries.  The libraries use the Library of Congress classification to organize our collections. Each item has its own unique call number, and these call numbers correspond to academic disciplines or subject areas. Most information can be divided into these areas like, psychology, literature, science, medicine, etc. When you find a book in the HELM catalog the call number will lead you to an area that may  have more books on your topic. If the book is located in another HELM library you can place a hold and have it delivered to NSCC.
