Subject Databases

These databases focus on specific subject areas. Each of these resources covers environmental issues related to the purview of the database.

In order to access the Library’s databases off campus:

Environmental Issues & Policy Collection
Explore topics and events within earth systems, global change, pollution and populations, with diverse perspectives from the scientific community, policymakers, and corporate interests.
GreenFILE
Covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Scholarly, government and general-interest titles include content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and recycling.
Science in Context
Effective July 1, 2025, this database will no longer be available. Access was previously provided by the Massachusetts Library System (MLS) and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC). As a result of Executive Order 14238, the MBLC has lost funding and will no longer be able to support access to this particular database. Agriculture Collection
Broad agricultural coverage spanning practical farming to recent scientific research in horticulture.
Communication and Mass Media Collection
Find peer reviewed journals, American and international news sources, and trade magazines. Best for students taking marketing, business, communication, and management classes.
Hospitality, Tourism & Leisure Collection
Search scholarly journals, magazines, and trade publications covering topics in hospitality, tourism, event planning, and restaurant management. Information on airline news, Fodor’s travel guides, vacation planning guides, and industry overviews.

General Databases

These general databases cover a variety of topics and formats. Each of these includes information on environmental issues.

Academic OneFile
Find peer reviewed journals, trade magazines and news sources in a wide range of subjects areas, including: social sciences, humanities, environmental science, criminal justice, and business.
Academic Search Complete
Search a wide range of full-text journals, magazines, books, reports, conference proceedings and Associated Press videos. Includes peer-reviewed content for STEM research, the social sciences, and humanities.
Global Issues in Context

Opposing Viewpoints in Context
Informed viewpoints support learners in developing critical-thinking skills and drawing their own conclusions. Covers current social issues through viewpoints, reference articles, infographics, news, images, video, and audio.
New York Times
Access daily regional, national, and international news stories. Good resource for primary sources (1980-Present)
Kanopy streaming video
Access documentaries, training films, and educational films on various subjects. Includes classic films, PBS, Great Courses, California Newsreel, the Criterion Collection, indie films, and world cinema from award-winning filmmakers.
Swank
Provides streaming access to popular feature films. The films featured on the Swank platform are chosen by faculty to support courses at NSCC.
