How do I provide access to...?

Use this guide to help navigate copyright & fair use when providing access to required course materials:

 Articles

...from a single issue of an electronic journal held by the Library?

SAFE CALL Provide links to any number of articles.
BEST PRACTICES Include permanent links to articles in Blackboard.

...from an open access (OA) journal, freely and legally available on the Web?

SAFE CALL Provide links to any number of articles.
BEST PRACTICES Include permanent links to articles in Blackboard.

..from a single issue of a print journal held by the Library?

SAFE CALL Provide a PDF of a single article.  Obtain permission from the copyright holder for additional articles.
BEST PRACTICES Scan and upload PDF's into Blackboard.

..from a single issue of a print or electronic journal NOT held by the Library or available OA?

SAFE CALL Provide links to or PDF's of one article for one semester.  For additional articles in the first semester, and for all articles in subsequent semesters, obtain permission from the copyright holder.
BEST PRACTICES Scan an upload PDF's to Blackboard.

Books

...an e-book?

SAFE CALL Provide links to all or part of an e-book provided by the Library or as an OER.
BEST PRACTICES Include permanent links to e-books in Blackboard.
...an entire print book?
SAFE CALL Place books owned by the Library, those you wish to donate to the Library, or those you would like the Library to purchase on Reserve.
BEST PRACTICES Request that the Library acquire the title as an e-book and link to content via Blackboard.
...part of a print book?
SAFE CALL Provide a PDF of one chapter, or up to 10%, or the book.  Obtain permission from the copyright holder to provide access to more than one chapter or 10% of the book.
BEST PRACTICES Upload the PDF to Blackboard.  Request that the Library acquire the title as and e-book and link to content via Blackboard, or place the complete print book on Reserve and direct students to read appropriate portions.

Video

...an film in class?

SAFE CALL Show all or part of a legally obtained films in any format in your F2F classroom. 
BEST PRACTICES Show only DVD's owned by the Library or that you request that the Library acquire in class.  Link to streaming versions provided by the Library or available as OER in Blackboard.  NOTE: Even if you have your own Netflix account, you should not show video from Netflix in your classroom, as it is expressly prohibited in the Netflix user agreement.

...a film assigned for outside of class viewing?

SAFE CALL Place a DVD on Reserve or provide a link to the streaming version of the film.
BEST PRACTICES Place only DVD's owned by the Library or that you request the Library to acquire on Reserve.  Link to streaming versions in Blackboard.
