National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science
About the NSF Collection
- One of the primary goals of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science is to develop and maintain a nationally accessible refereed collection of exemplary case studies in all areas of science for use at the undergraduate, graduate, and high school level. We have been working toward this goal for over 20 years and our collection of more than 500 peer-reviewed cases has become the centerpiece of our website.
- Our cases collection has been cited by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Research Council (NRC) as a source for model case studies.
- The cases are written by science faculty primarily from the U.S. and Canada, although our authors also hail from Sweden, Egypt, and Australia.
- All of the cases on our site are published after undergoing a rigorous process of peer review by outside reviewers and author revision. They are also copy-edited in-house and formatted for web publication. Our goal is to produce and disseminate the highest quality material, both in terms of the content and the presentation.
- Copyright for these materials is held by the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science. They may be used by teachers subject to our usage guidelines (see Permitted Uses).
- We invite you to browse the collection. We also encourage you to become a member of our community by submitting a case of your own or by becoming one of our case reviewers. Case reviewers and case authors receive free access to the notes and answer keys for the year that they have been active.
These four case studies from Annenburg Learner are interactivities based on actual scientific research projects carried out by leading teams in the field. Each case study takes the participant through a series of steps in a research project — just follow the step-by-step instructions to test a hypothesis or analyze data. The case studies provide an interactive experience that complements the video and text chapters and provides a window into the choices, challenges, compromises, and rewards associated with biological inquiry.

Investigative Case Based Learning
Investigative Case-Based Learning (ICBL) is a variant of Problem Based Learning that encourages students to develop questions that can be explored further by reasonable investigative approaches. Students then gather data and information for testing their hypotheses. They produce materials which can be used to persuade others of their findings. Students employ a variety of methods and resources, including traditional laboratory and field techniques, software simulations and models, data sets, internet-based tools and information retrieval methods.
Investigative cases draw from realistic situations in which scientific reasoning can be applied. Although the case defines a general area of science under investigation, students generate specific questions to guide their study. Students investigate scientific problems that they find meaningful. In the process they also learn to:
- locate and manage information;
- develop reasonable answers to the questions;
- use scientific inquiry strategies and methods;
- provide support for their conclusions, and;
- work on decision making abilities.
Science Based Medicine
Science-Based Medicine is dedicated to evaluating medical treatments and products of interest to the public in a scientific light, and promoting the highest standards and traditions of science in health care. Online information about alternative medicine is overwhelmingly credulous and uncritical, and even mainstream media and some medical schools have bought into the hype and failed to ask the hard questions.
We provide a much needed “alternative” perspective — the scientific perspective.
