Using the Overdrive App on your Apple or Android Device

Getting Started

  1. Download the free OverDrive Media Console App from the iTunes App Store or Google App Store.  
  2. Open the OverDrive or Libby by Overdrive App.
  3. You will be asked to either create an account or login to an existing account. Tap create an account.  Register using your local library card or your BPL card numbers. Search for your local library or the BPL. Select your local library or BPL from the list and enter your library card number in the following search box.

Downloading eBooks - Overdrive

  1. To borrow a book on the app and go to your bookshelf (if the app doesn’t take you directly to the bookshelf tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner and select bookshelf from the menu) tap Add a Title. 
  2. Search for an ebook or audiobook you would like to download. Hint: This can be done in a number of ways: Search for a book in the search bar at the top of the page, select a title from the sliders on the page, or browse subjects & collections by taping the menu icon (three horizontal lines) to the right of the search box.
  3. When you have found a book you want, tap borrow below (or to the side of) the image of the book jacket. Hint: In overdrive you can tell a book is available by looking at the bar above each book jacket. Books that are available will be blue with the word available. Books that are checkout will be white and say Wait List (these items can be put on hold).  You can also search books that are available now.
  4. After you tap borrow you will be given the option of downloading the book to your device. Hint: The loan period is set automatically to 14 days. You can change this to 21 days by clicking Account at the top of the page and then Settings and selecting 21 days.
  5. At this point you should see a blue message at the top that says “Success! This eBook is Checked out to you…” At the bottom of the message tap the word loans to go to your loans page. Tap Choose a Format and select EPUB eBook or from the list. Hint: There is an alternate method for access ebooks and audiobooks: If you have wifi access and a blue Read button appears under the Choose a Format button you can tap this to access your ebook in your web browser. To save ebooks so they can be accessed when you don’t have wifi, tap the menu button at the top center of the page and select Offline Access. Audiobooks cannot be saved using this method and should be downloaded using steps 5 and 6
  6. Tap Choose a Format and select EPUB eBook or from the list. To save ebooks so they can be accessed when you don’t have wifi, tap the menu button at the top center of the page and select Offline Access.   7. Your book should now appear in your OverDrive  or Libby Bookshelf.

Returning and extending eBook access

  1. Go to your Bookshelf. Press and hold the book jacket of the title you want to return or tap the plus sign next to the book you want to return. A Return button should appear, tap it.
  2. Your eBook will automatically return once it passes the due date.  You can extend the due date, but only if there isn’t a waitlist for the title you borrowed.

Downloading eBooks using Libby

  1. Browse your library's collection and borrow a title.
  2. Borrowed titles appear under Shelf > Loans and download to the app automatically when you're connected to Wi-Fi, so you can read them when you're offline.
  3. From your Loans, you can:
    1. Tap Read With... to choose where you'd like to read the book (Kindle or Libby), then finish sending to Kindle (U.S. libraries only) or start reading in Libby.
    2. Tap Open Audiobook or Open Magazine to start reading or listening to that title.
    3. Tap Manage Loan to see options like Renew and Return.
